If, like me, you were a fan of Whose Line Is It Anyway back in the 90s, you will have developed a deep love and respect for those capable of laying themselves bare and carrying out improvised comedy in front of a live audience. Last night I was delighted to find that the spirit of WHLIA still lives on, and is in very safe hands thanks to Black Cherry Theatre Company.
This group of multi-talented performers (with an ever-increasing line-up, but last night featuring Ollie Blake - holding it together masterfully as both compere and performer - Chloe-Louisa Hughes, Mark Haines, Michelle Williams and Jonathan Davis) plus their brilliant musicians have a monthly slot at Bournemouth's Shelley Theatre on a Friday night throughout the rest of 2019.
Last night we were treated to an impressive array of musical and theatrical or film genres while the audience gave suggestions for everyday scenarios, objects or locations that the Black Cherry squad had to masterfully weave into stories and songs through a selection of games instigated by Olle. We were soon in stitches as the pace quickened and I was completely in awe of how quick-witted and lightning fast they had to be. This is performance on another level!
There were so many twists and turns to the skits that I couldn't even begin to describe them - it really has to be seen to be believed. I will forever more remain suspicious of water coolers though ...!
The audience left on a real high - and I can't wait to see what the next show brings. Black Cherry keep everything very family friendly if there are young people in the audience, so it's a great way to introduce kids to improv. At the end of the show it was announced that in 2019 Black Cherry will begin a residency at Lighthouse, so please do support them for the rest of their run at the Shelley and then check out what they're up to in Poole, as this is likely to include some new work alongside the improv.
I really loved the energy and style of this theatre company - they reminded me in many ways of the uber talented Le Navet Bete and I wish them the same well-deserved success as they continue to grow.
You can catch Black Cherry again at the Shelley Theatre on 15th September.
